About Cross Country Spikes

A cross country spike is a type of running shoe specifically designed for cross country running, which involves racing on varied terrains such as grass, mud, gravel, and uneven surfaces. Cross country spikes are lightweight, low profile running shoes with aggressive, grippy outsoles that provide optimal traction on challenging terrains. They typically feature durable materials to withstand the demands of off road running.

Fitness Sports stocks the Nike Dragonfly XC, Zoom Rival XC, and Victory XC, Saucony Kilkenny XC and Havok XC, New Balance XC Seven, and the On Cloudspike XC, in men's, women's, and youth sizes. Read where to get cross country spikes in Iowa and our top 10 cross country spike questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cross country spikes and track spikes?

Cross country spikes have a more protective, rubber covered outsole, a little more cushioning, and take longer 3/8 inch pins for grass and mud. Track spikes are lighter, with an exposed plate and 1/4 inch pins for the track.

What spike pins should I use for cross country?

Most Iowa courses run well with 3/8 inch pins; go to 1/2 inch only for deep mud, and drop to 1/4 inch on firm, dry courses or where the meet requires it. We stock all three sizes and wrenches.

Do you have cross country spikes in youth sizes?

Yes. The Nike Zoom Rival XC and Dragonfly XC run down to size 4, and Saucony and New Balance carry small sizes in season. See the youth spikes collection for everything under size 4.
