The best shoes for standing all day pair steady cushioning with real support through the arch and heel, in a size and width measured on your own foot. For nurses on twelve hour shifts, teachers on classroom tile, retail staff behind a register and warehouse crews on concrete, that matters more at hour ten than any brand name. We have been fitting Iowa feet since 1984, and the pairs that hold up best at work are almost always cushioned running shoes, fitted properly and replaced before the foam gives out.
What an all day work shoe actually needs
Hard floors do not give anything back, so a work shoe has to absorb that for hours without collapsing under you. Four things do most of the job.
- Cushioning that keeps its shape. You want impact absorption without a mushy feel. Very soft foam can leave your feet working harder just to stay balanced.
- Support under the arch and heel. A midsole and heel counter that hold their form spread the load across the whole foot instead of a few hot spots.
- Structure, not only softness. Standing still is its own kind of work, and your foot wants a stable platform.
- Fit ahead of features. The wrong size or width will feel poor no matter how good the foam is.
Many customers tell us the biggest change is finally wearing the correct width. If foot pain keeps up after a good fitting and a fresh pair, it is worth talking to a doctor or physical therapist.
Cushion or stability: which side are you on
If you want the softest landing for long hours on concrete, start with max cushion. The HOKA Bondi is the shoe we hand to nurses and healthcare staff more than any other, and the HOKA Clifton gives a similar cushioned feel in a lighter, less bulky package that teachers and retail workers often prefer. The full range sits in our max cushion collection.
If your foot rolls inward and you want more guidance, a stability shoe adds structure on top of the cushion, and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS has been the steady favorite there for years. Compare the lineup in the stability collection. Between the two camps sits the Brooks Ghost, a balanced cushioned shoe that suits many foot types and a safe place to start if you are not sure. The On Cloud series is worth a look if your workplace expects something sleeker with moderate cushioning.
Fit is the part most people get wrong
Leave about a thumb width of room in front of your longest toe. Feet swell over a shift, so a shoe that feels snug at the start of the day will feel tight by the end of it. Try shoes on in the afternoon if you can, and wear the socks you actually work in.
Width is the other half. Plenty of people size up when what they needed was a wider last. Pull the insole out and stand on it: if your foot hangs over the edges, you need room across the ball of the foot rather than more length. We measure length, width and arch height on both feet, then watch you walk before we fit anything.
Rotation, socks and insoles
A shoe worn every day never gets time to bounce back. Midsole foam recovers between wears, so two pairs in rotation last longer than one pair worn into the ground. Buy the second a few months after the first and the fresher shoe is always waiting.
Socks matter more than people expect. Cotton holds sweat against your skin all shift, which is how blisters start, while a wool or synthetic blend moves moisture away and keeps its shape. Insoles are the third piece: a supportive insole gives your arch something to rest against, and CURREX insoles come in different arch profiles, so we can match one to your foot instead of guessing.
Come in and get measured
Fitting is free at every Fitness Sports store and no appointment is needed. We measure foot length, width and arch height, check how you walk, and talk through what your shift looks like, because ten hours in one spot asks something different of a shoe than a warehouse floor all night.
There are seven stores across Iowa, in Ames, Ankeny, Clive, Coralville, Des Moines, Marion and North Liberty. If a pair does not work out after a few shifts, bring it back within 30 days with the receipt for a refit, exchange or refund. Online orders ship free over $70, and store pickup is normally ready within an hour.
Questions we get asked
What kind of shoe is best for nurses on twelve hour shifts?
Most nurses we fit do well in a max cushion running shoe such as the HOKA Bondi, because hospital floors give nothing back and the extra foam takes the edge off hour ten. If your foot rolls inward, a stability shoe like the Brooks Adrenaline GTS gives you that cushion with more structure under it. Width matters as much as the model does.
How often should I replace shoes I stand in all day?
A common guide is 300 to 500 miles, but standing is hard to count in miles, so watch the shoe instead. Look for compression lines through the midsole foam, a heel that leans to one side when the shoe sits on a flat table, and worn tread under the ball of the foot. If your feet ache earlier in the shift than they used to, tired foam is usually why.
Do I need a wide width for work shoes?
Many people do and never find out, because they buy a half size longer instead of one size wider. If your foot spills over the edge of the insole when you take it out and stand on it, or the upper creases hard across the ball of your foot, ask for a wide. We measure width on both feet at every fitting and keep wide and extra wide in stock.
Are insoles worth it for standing all day?
They can be. A supportive insole gives the arch something to rest against over a long shift, and many customers on hard floors tell us it is the change they notice most after fit. We carry CURREX insoles and match them to your arch height in store. If foot pain keeps up after a good fit and a fresh pair, it is worth talking to a doctor.
Can I wear running shoes to a job on my feet?
Yes, and that is what most of our work customers end up in. Running shoes are built for repeated impact on hard surfaces, which is the same problem a long shift creates. Check your employer dress code first, since some workplaces ask for all black uppers. We can point you to models that meet those rules without giving up cushioning or support.
If your feet are done before your shift is, let us measure you properly. Check hours and directions for all seven stores and stop in any time, or order online and pick your pair up at the store closest to work.
