Des Moines Segment Challenge

Des Moines Segment Challenge

Wieland Racing is wanting to create an opportunity to have fun this winter, as well as see who is the KOM/QOM of Des Moines for the second year in a row. This challenge will take course over the month of February. Weekly battles will take place against other local runners for Fitness Sports Gift Cards 1st – $100, 2nd – $50, 3rd $25! A BONUS this year is that those that make it into the final 8 will also receive a Normatec session from Fitness Sports.

Last year we tried something new! We switched up the bracket style competition with a Mario Kart Cascading Point System for 4 weeks. The fastest athlete earned the most points based on total participants signed up. From there each finisher earned -1 based on their position. If you were unable to complete one of the segments in the given week you earned earn 0 points for that week. The grand winner was based on the total number of points. New this year we are looking to combine both systems!

For the first 2 weeks of February you will have the chance to earn your way into the final 8 match up. From January 30th until February 12th, 3 segments will be open to post your fastest times. The best 8 combined scores using the cascading point system will get you into the next round starting on February 13th. Once in the top 8, we will circle seed you into heads up matches like they do in March Madness. From there you will 3 weeks in a row, battling it out to stay in the race. Knocked out already? No worries, will will also keep a leaderboard of the top times on the segments assigned to the given week.

Our goal is to have a separate women’s and men’s bracket this year!

Round 1 (3 segments over 2 weeks)

For the first 2 week of the segment challenge you will have the chance to tackle 3 separate segments and rack up the best score possible. These do not need to be completed in any particular order, and can be ran at any point over the 2 week span as many times you would like. The best time will be recorded.

Open: 1/30/2023 -> 2/12/2023

For the first segment we will be taking the challenge to THE AMP, once again. It is a flat, fast, tracklike loop that measures 0.32 starting from the furthest south point. It takes place on innermost circle at the amphitheater. Given it’s tracklike nature it is the perfect opportunity to take a few shots at your fastest time. Another bonus is that it is cleared during the wintertime, so it is safe to go fast! The Wieland Racing team will also attempt to clear it more the week of.

*Please exercise caution when attempting segments, don’t be rude, and have fun!

Open: 1/30/2023 -> 2/12/2023

Next up we have another tough one. After last year’s addition of the Sherman Hill we wanted to throw another hill into the mix this year. This 1.00mi long hill is going to make your lungs and legs burn. It starts at the T intersection, goes along the paved trail to the parking lot, and then continues all the way until Grand Ave. Going into the event the top times recorded for this segment are 5:09 by Chase Horrocks on the men’s side and 7:14 by Hannah Thomas on the women’s side.
